How to do Active Track and Force Mobile on DJI Ronin S

Active track is a useful feature to have on a gimbal like the DJI Ronin S. It is now available in the DJI Ronin S with at least the January 2020 firmware update! In this post I’ll show you how to do Active Track and Force Mobile on DJI Ronin S.

Instructions for Active Track on Ronin S

    1. First you need to update your firmware on the DJI Ronin S January 2020 or newer
    2. Download the DJI Ronin Assistant on your computer
    3. Connect your Ronin to your laptop and install the software
    4. Update your Ronin App on your mobile device to the latest version and connect to Ronin Via bluetooth no cable is needed
    5. Mount your Camera to the Ronin
    6. You will need a Ronin S phone holder or another rig. I used the smartphone holder from a cheap tripod
    7. Balance your Camera on Ronin with the phone. It doesn’t have to be perfectly balanced
    8. You can balance and auto-tune if you want. This may be tricky with the phone on top. I didn’t do it because i was just leaving the Camera static
    9. Open the Ronin App and go to Create and Active Track
    10. Touch or draw a box around the object.

Instructions for Force Mobile on Ronin S

  6. You will need a Ronin S phone holder or another rig to mount to a tripod with a fluid head like my Manfrotto tripod.
  7. Balance and auto-tune if you want
  8. Open the Ronin App and go to Create and Force Mobile
  9. Enable Force Mobile and adjust the controls for Pan, Tilt, and Roll as necessary
  10. You can play around with smoothing to slow and smooth things out.

Please watch the videos for a better visual understanding of how it works. These new features are quite powerful. The active track is a nice feature that could even automate video capture of a moving subject like someone talking on a stage. See how I’ve used it in my test video.

The Force mobile allows you to feel like a jedi controlling your Ronin precisely with your tripod from a distance. I can see it being useful for more precise movements and it gives the user the benefit of doing this from a distance. I’m not sure how practical this is, but it does look cool.
